Angry villagers from Jahanabad thrash JD (U) MLA, policeman after custodial death

Jahanabad: Angry villagers on Friday morning beat up the local Janata Dal (United) MLA Abhiram Sharma and the Station House Officer of Shakurabad after the death of a 70-year-old man in police custody.

The old man, Devaki Chaudhary was arrested on charge of power theft and was taken to Shakurabad police station, where he was put inside a lockup.

Eyewitnesses said, the old man’s condition deteriorated due to cold wave, and worried policemen rushed him to Jahanabad district hospital for treatment, but he died on the way.

Villagers from Gaganpura village reached the hospital, where women thrashed the SHO Vijay Kumar with shoes.

The local JD (U) MLA Abhiram Sharma reached the spot. He too was manhandled by the villagers.

The SP of Jahanabad has ordered a probe into the incident.
