Asansol: A group of 30 armed dacoits looted Rs 50 lakh from the cattle traders of Bihar after pulling the chain of a running 13049 Up Howrah-Amritsar Express near Raniganj station on Saturday evening. Sources said ten of the passengers were admitted to Asansol Divisional Railway hospital with severe injuries.

Sources said a group of about 20 to 22 cattle traders from Bihar’s Buxar went to Illambazar in Birbhum to sell their cattle. All of them had several lakhs of rupees with them as they were coming back after selling the cattle. “They boarded the general compartment of the train from Panagarh. Soon after leaving Raniganj, the train came to a grinding halt at a dark place. Later, the dacoits barged into the compartment with daggers, rods and pipeguns, roughed up the traders, took away the money kept in a gunny bag and disappeared in the dark,” witnesses said. The victims could lodge a complaint only after the train reached Asansol.

Police said the dacoits had prior information that the cattle smugglers were travelling in the train with huge money.
