PARADIP: A most wanted criminal of Bihar was arrested from Chandanpur in Puri district on Monday. The accused, Sanatan Kumar Mahato (40), is wanted in more than a dozen cases in that state and also carries a cash reward of `1 lakh on his head.

Mahato, had been declared a proclaimed offender in as many as 15 criminal cases. He had executed violent property offences across  Patna and adjoining district. Mahato, a resident of Auta under Hatidah police limits in Patna district, was staying in Chandanpur under a fake identity of a tile mason for the last 15 years. On Monday morning, a team of Bihar police which carried two permanent warrants against Mahato arrested him on charges of robbery and dacoity.

Police produced him in the court of Sub-Divisional Magistrate which granted Bihar police a 36-hour transit remand for the accused. Mahato has been taken to Patna, said Puri SP Sarthak Sarangi.

According to police, Mahato was working as a contractual mason for several years after he had taken refuge in Chandanpur, 60 kms from Bhubaneswar. Police came to know about his antecedents after a woman labourer lodged a harassment complaint against Mahato with Chandanpur police. On being quizzed, Mahato tried to conceal his identity which came to fore after his voter identity card was seized. Further inquiry revealed that he was a dreaded criminal wanted in multiple cases by Hatidah police, said Chandanpur IIC Jayadeep Mohanty.
