congressPatna: Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) on Saturday demanded constitution of a national commission for extremely backward class (EBC) to ensure improvement in their living standard. The party also asked the Centre to ensure 18% quota for EBC in government jobs and various educational institutions.

Addressing a meeting of state executive body of the party’s EBC cell at Sadaqat Ashram here, BPCC president Ashok Choudhary said EBC is a vast group of 122 castes which are extremely backward socially, financially and politically. Calling upon the EBC people to return to the Congress fold in Bihar, Choudhary said his party always worked to protect the interests of EBC and also remained committed to ensuring their respectful living.

“The EBC constitute 33 to 40% of total population in Bihar. But their social condition is just like dalits. Congress wants to uplift their social-economic condition by giving them right and respect,” he said. The meeting was presided over by cell president Shyam Nandan Thakur.

In a resolution, the executive body also decided to ensure maximum participation of EBC workers and leaders in the proposed Patna rally of the state Congress on August 9 this year.
