Patna: The wife of Ram Babu Gupta, the Indian revenue service (IRS) officer arrested on the charge of sexually harassing a girl student at his coaching institute, has filed for divorce.

Dipti filed her divorce petition in a family court in Madhubani district on Monday accusing her husband, suspended joint commissioner of income tax, of harassing her on one pretext or the other. She alleged she was living with her parents in Madhubani district for the past four years.

Dipti said her ordeal began soon after their marriage about eight years ago. Ram Babu and his family members started harassing her a month after their marriage, she said. During her stay with her husband in Sitamarhi’s Lakshmipur village and in Patna, she came to know that Ram Babu was impotent.

The matter was settled temporarily on the intervention of some members of the local panchayat. According to Dipti, her father in-law, Jay Narayan Mahto, promised to give her a flat in Patna but he failed to keep his promise and the flat was never offered.

She said she was driven out of her in-laws’ house after which she is living with her parents in Madhubani district. She has demanded Rs 60 lakh as maintenance besides Rs 45 lakh against the gold jewellery taken from her.

Ram Babu was arrested from Patna in February on the charge of sexually harassing a girl studying at his coaching institute, which is a residential facility.

The girl was from Sikkim.
