High school teacher, daughter arrested for stealing sapphire from jewellery shop

PATNA: In a shocking incident, a Patna based high school’s 55-year-old Hindi teacher and her 25-year-old daughter were arrested on Wednesday night for allegedly stealing a precious sapphire gem from a noted jewellery shop located at Boring road under Kotwali police station area on Tuesday.

Patna SSP Manu Maharaaj said the stolen gem was recovered on the teacher’s confession from her official quarter located inside the school premises near Gandhi Maidan.

“The teacher and her daughter were arrested from another jewellery shop located at Hathua Market under Pirbahore police station area,” he said.

He said the daughter had studied fashion designing course from a reputed college in Mumbai and was presently living in Patna.

He said on Tuesday evening that the mother-daughter duo went to the jewellery shop at boring Road and asked the salesman to display some precious gems. “The salesman stared displaying gems and other jewelleries. In between, the mother hid a sapphire in her hairs. Later the duo left the shop,” the SSP said.

“However, the duo’s movements were captured in CCTV cameras installed inside the shop,” he said.

He also said the jewellery shop owners amid themselves, shared the CCTV grab of the incident following which police received a call on Wednesday night that two woman looking similar to those in CCTV footage of the incident were inside another jewellery shop at Hathua market.

“A police team apprehended them immediately after which both were quizzed on which they spilled the beans leading to stolen gem’s recovery,” he said.

Meanwhile, school sources said they were shocked over the development. “A police team had reached the school premises on Wednesday night. The woman teacher was also the prayer in-charge and was present in school till around 4pm on Wednesday. However she did not reported for duty on Thursday. When queried, we came to know about the shocking development,” a school employee said on condition of anonymity.
