Patna: A newly-wed couple allegedly committed suicide by jumping under the wheels of a running train in Rohtas district on Monday night, police said on Tuesday.

Police said the bodies of Pooja Kumari, 21, and her husband, Dharmendra Kumar, 25, were recovered from the railway tracks near Fazalganj Durgasthan on Tuesday morning. A motorcycle belonging to the couple was also recovered from the spot.

Pooja, a resident of Kori Balia village under the jurisdiction of Natwar police station in Rohtas district was married to Dharmendra on June 22 this year. Dharmendra, a resident of Adarsh Colony under the jurisdiction of Koriari police station, used to eke a living by ferrying garments.

Pooja’s father, Anil Gupta, alleged that the couple had committed suicide under duress. He alleged that Pooja had told her family about the ill-treatment at the hands of her in-laws.

Dharmendra, police sources said, used to stay with his parents and elder brother. His elder brother, Jitendra, used to assist the family in their traditional family business of ferrying clothes. But financial constraints often led to quarrels.

“No suicide note has been recovered from the spot. The police recovered a motorbike, reportedly belonging to the deceased,” a police officer said.

A case of unnatural death has been lodged with the Sasaram GRP. The post-mortem report is awaited.
