NRC worry leads to suicide

Dhubri: A woman, purportedly under pressure to prove herself an Indian citizen, committed suicide here on Wednesday morning.

The deceased, identified as Sahimoon Bibi, 45, a resident of ward 10 of this town and originally a resident of Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, used to work in the nearby households for a livelihood. She used to live with her husband, Khairul Islam, in a shack along a non-functional railway line.

Bibi was reportedly under acute pressure for the past two months to produce documents which would enlist her on the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is being updated in Assam to weed out foreigners staying illegally in the state.

Bibi’s family members said she had received a notice from Foreigners Tribunal, Dhubri, two months ago and was running from pillar to post to procure documents that would prove her citizenship. Islam said she visited her parents’ place in Muzaffarpur to procure documents about her legacy data but could not get any. She was also finding it difficult to pay lawyer’s fees.

Her siblings said she was also worried that the names of her six siblings were also not included in the first draft of the NRC published on December 31 midnight.

She had fallen sick some time back and was admitted to Dhubri civil hospital. Unable to take the pressure any more, she hanged herself from a bamboo on the ceiling of her dwelling with the help of a sari, Islam, a street vendor, said.

Dhubri Sadar police station sub-inspector Jayanta Das said the body had been sent for post-mortem and investigations had begun. He said it was too early to link the suicide with NRC. “The facts will come out only after proper investigation,” he added.

Bibi’s death comes on the heels of another alleged NRC-linked death. On Monday, Ratan Rai, 55, a grade IV employee of Inland Water Transport Department residing in Guwahati, had hanged himself to death. His family members claimed he was worried as his name was not in the first draft of the NRC.
