Patna: Jalandhar-based Indian sports goods manufacturing giant Nivia has agreed to set up a manufacturing unit in Muzaffarpur in Bihar – a move expected to provide employment to over 1,000 people in the state, while providing better reach of the company in the Jharkhand, Bengal, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Northeast and Nepal markets.

“Sports goods manufacturer Nivia has agreed to come to Bihar and start operations. We will provide them space at the leather cluster developed in Muzaffarpur, where they will also be able to get traditionally skilled workers easily,” industries department principal secretary S. Siddharth said.

In the beginning, the company will make footballs, gloves, shoes and balls of other sports such as volleyball, basketball, at the Muzaffarpur facility and may diversify into sportswear and other goods.

The development happened after a state industries department delegation led by Siddharth visited Jalandhar, where Nivia has its operations.

The delegation not only visited the Nivia plant and met company’s managing director Rajesh Kharbanda but also attended a session on “opportunities in sports goods manufacturing sector in Bihar” organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

A roundtable meeting with prominent industrialists of sports goods manufacturing sector was also organised.
