Railways has lodged an FIR against a Bihar MP and 13 others, including some local MLAs, for “obstructing rail traffic” that affected services in the North East Frontier Railway network.

“We have lodged an FIR against Asraful Haq, sitting MP from Kishanganj, and 13 others, including some MLAs from Kishenganj and adjoining areas, for obstructing rail traffic at Kishenganj yesterday,” a source in the Northeast Frontier Railway told PTI.

Protesters, led by Congress MPs Haq and Deepa Dasmunsi and local MLAs from Kishenganj and West Bengal’s Raiganj districts, squatted on the tracks disrupting movement of trains between Panjipara and Hatwar railway stations.

They were demanding immediate transfer of land by the Bihar government to the Aligarh Muslim University for its proposed study centre.

The FIR lodged with the Government Railway Police at Kishenganj also named 500 ‘unknown persons’ who were involved in the rail blockade.

In Guwahati, officials said rail and road links to the northeast through Kishenganj on the North East Frontier Railway sector have resumed.

“The blockade was lifted and both rail and road links have been restored since midnight,” N F Railway CPRO S Hajong said.

Rail traffic in the Katihar division of the NFR, which remained stalled for over 12 hours, was returning to normal, sources said.
