Six children die after car falls into pond in Araria

Six children were killed when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in which they were travelling hit a tree and fell into a pond in Bihar’s Araria district on Tuesday morning.

Police said the accident took place near Suksena village in Tarabari police station area of Araria district, 370 km northeast of state capital Patna.

The children were returning to Doriya village in Raniganj police station of the district after attending a marriage ceremony at Chikni village in Kursankanta police station area, 30 km from Araria town, the police said.

“The driver lost control over the vehicle while trying to save some children who were crossing the road. The vehicle hit a tree and then fell into a pond,” Tarabari police station (SHO) Prashant Kumar said.

Soon after the accident, locals rushed to the site and pulled out the children from the vehicle. They were immediately taken to Kursakanta primary health centre, where six children were declared dead.

The dead had been identified as Golu Kumar, 8, Naina Kumari, 8, Mithun Kumar, 10, Karan Kumar, 10, Ajay Kumar, 12, and Nitish Rishidev, 14, the station house officer said.

Two injured children had been sent to Araria sadar hospital, a government facility, for treatment, he said, adding the driver escaped unhurt and fled from the spot.
