Truck mows down five in Vaishali

Patna: At least five persons were killed and two others seriously injured when a speeding truck knocked them down near Lalganj in Vaishali district, 45km north of Patna, in the early hours of Saturday.

The accident occurred while eight people were waiting near Repura Chowk on the Hajipur-Lalganj road. A truck, running at high speed, mowed them down, killing four on the spot. Among the three injured, one succumbed on way to the hospital.

Three of the dead were identified as Nandlal residents from Vaishali Amrendra Kumar Tiwari, 70, Santosh Tiwari, 30, and Sanjeet Kumar, 21. The two other injured were admitted to Lalganj primary health centre and from there referred to Hajipur sadar hospital in critical condition.

Police said the victims were returning to Nandlal on their motorbikes after attending a wedding ceremony. The truck driver fled the spot after abandoning the vehicle. The police later seized the truck.

In another incident, 46-year-old Geeta Devi and her son Babul Kumar were killed when a truck hit their sports utility vehicle near Maniyari on Mahua-Muzaffarpur road on Friday night.

The mother and son were returning to their home at Mahua Fudeni Chowk after a wedding ceremony in Muzaffarpur.

Geeta’s husband Diwakar Srivastava is a stamp vendor at Mahua sub-registry office in Vaishali district. The functioning in the sub-registry office remained disrupted in protest against the accident.
