Patna: A five-year-old girl belonging to the Scheduled Caste was allegedly raped by a youth in Begusarai district on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place when the victim had gone to her tutor’s house in a village under the jurisdiction of Mufassil police station in Begusarai district on Wednesday evening.

As the woman tutor was not present in the house, her relative, identified as Avinash Kumar Sharma, persuaded the students to stay for sometime on the pretext of taking tuition classes.

Eighteen-year-old Avinash relieved other girls after sometime but asked the five-year-old to stay on the pretext of dropping her home. Finding the girl alone, Avinash raped her in the classroom and then dropped her home.

The girl later complained of severe pain and was subsequently admitted to Begusarai sadar hospital.

The station house officer (SHO) of Mufassil police station, Lal Mohan Singh, said the girl’s statement was recorded and forwarded to the Women’s police station for further action.

“An FIR has been lodged at Women’s police station by the girl’s father,” Singh said, adding that raids were underway to nab the offender.

The incident has sparked off tension at the village as the girl belonged to the Scheduled Caste. Members of the Dalit community have threatened to launch an agitation if the accused was not arrested at the earliest. “We are shocked at the incident,” said a close relative of the girl, who had gone to meet the superintendent of police on Thursday.

Police said the accused was absconding after the incident. “We are trying to trace the accused with the help of his mobile, which is under surveillance,” said an investigating officer posted at the Women’s police station.
