UPSC results 2017: Many from Bihar make it to civil services

From the son of an IAS officer, daughter of an IPS officer to the son of a small shop owner, Bihar again had a number of candidates from varied backgrounds making it to the coveted civil services this year.

From the son of an IAS officer, daughter of an IPS officer to the son of a small shop owner, Bihar again had a number of candidates from varied backgrounds making it to the coveted civil services this year.

In Nawada, the joy of Arvind Kumar and Yashoda Devi knew no bounds when they got to know that their son Niranjan Kumar had cracked the civil services. Arvind has a small shop on the roadside in Pakri Barawan block of Nawada. Niranjan has got 728 rank in civil services exam and 73rd in Indian Forest Service exam. At present, he is working as assistant manager in coal India, Dhanbad.

Having done his schooling from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalay in 2004, he did his intermediate from Patna science College and later got into IIT. “I attribute my success to hard work and consistent effort,” he said.

Vinod Kumar, a resident of Banka district’s Babudih block, got 819th rank. He is presently posted as PF commissioner in Bangalore. His father Ashok Kumar has a grocery shop, while mother Renu Devi is a housewife. He is an engineering graduate.

Soumya Jha, a doctor, got 58th rank in her first attempt. Daughter of Dr Matangi Jha, who is posted with Railways, and SK Jha, 1989 batch IPS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, Soumya says she got inspired by her father to try for civil services. Her grandfather Dr Mohan Mishra is a known doctor in Darbhanga.

“I did my MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi and instead of pursuing PG, I opted for civil services. As it was my first attempt, I did not know how far I will go, but I am happy,” she said, attributing her success to streamlined and focused study.

Vivek Nandan, son of Dr Krishna Kumar of SK Medical College and Hospital, got 374 rank. He is also from medical stream, presently doing his MBBS from a Delhi-based college.

Somesh Upadhyay from Saran district got 34th rank, while Abhishek Chaurasia got 72nd rank. Neeraj Jha from Madhubani got 109th rank and he wants to join foreign service. Rakesh Ranja, son of Rita Roy and Ashok Roy, from Saharsa district, got 138th rank.

An IAS officer also saw his son following in his footsteps. Nitish Pandey, son of Karuna Pandey and Rajasthan cadre officer Srimat Pandey, got 141st rank. Nitish is an electrical engineering student at IIT, Chennai.

A graduate from IIT, Delhi, Kumar Sambhav, son of Sanjiv Kumar Singh, a graduate teacher at Central School, Kahalgaon, got 714th rank in his first attempt. “Her was very hard working and focussed since his childhood and that is the key to his success,” said a happy father of Sambhav.

Patna’s Sunny Raj cracked the civil services in his fourth attempt, though last time he had got Indian revenue service. Still, he was not satisfied and achieved 132nd rank this time. “I will get into Indian Police Service. I had worked hard it,” said Sunny, who is also an engineering graduate from NIT Jamshedpur.
