7 held for van blasts to free undertrials

Patna: Patna police have arrested seven criminals for trying to help undertrials escape from a police van by setting off bombs inside.

Four under-trials – Sonu Kumar, Mohammed Aslam, Avinash Kumar and Sikander Yadav – had on Tuesday exploded bombs inside a prisoners’ van on the busy New Bypass Road in Patna to escape. But they failed to escape.

Vicky Kumar, Vicky Tanti, Amarjeet Kumar, Golu Tathera, Sunny Malik, Golu Kumar and Prakash Kumar were arrested from Mangal Talab area after Sonu and Sikander Yadav confessed before police that criminals from Patna area had tried to help them escape.

The criminals had assembled at Mangal Talab area and were planning to execute another crime. They are hard-core criminals with several cases lodged against them at different police stations.

“Sone and Sikander confessed they hatched a plan to flee from jail and called Amarjeet and Vicky for help,” Patna senior superintendent of police Manu Maharaaj said. “The undertrials had agreed to pay Rs 50,000 for the bombs.”

As had been planned, Amarjeet and Vicky and the others assembled at Patna City court on Tuesday and handed over a bag containing bombs and pistols hidden with fruits to Sonu and Sikander.
