Patna: Nalanda police recovered the decomposed body of a JDU students’ wing leader, Rakesh Kumar, 35, found buried in an agricultural field on Sunday, five days after he had gone missing from Harnaut Bazaar in Nalanda on May 29.

A police team attached to Bena police station in Nalanda district reached Alipur Pachaura village on being apprised by residents that a body had been buried in an agricultural field on the outskirts. The police exhumed the body and sent it to Biharsharif Sadar hospital for post-mortem.

Later, the body was identified as that of Rakesh Kumar, who was traceless since May 29.

The deceased’s brother, Nitish Kumar, and father in-law Avinash Kumar had lodged a missing case with Harnaut police station. Avinash had apprehended abduction of his son-in-law, who happened to be the general secretary of the JDU students’ wing.

Nalanda superintendent of police (SP) Sudhir Kumar Porika said a case had been lodged against four persons on the statement of Nitish Kumar, a resident of Kharuara village in Nalanda district. Rakesh was last seen with two acquaintances, Manish Kumar and Diwakar Kumar.

Nitish alleged that the police’s callous attitude led to Rakesh’s killing. “Had the police taken prompt action soon after the complaint was lodged, Rakesh would have been alive today. Harnaut police didn’t take any action to trace him, which resulted in the murder,” said Nitish.

An investigating officer revealed that Rakesh had gone to a bank to withdraw money on May 29.

“Later, he went to his Patel Nagar residence. Some residents had spotted him at Dihra village with Diwakar and Manish. The reason behind the murder is yet to be ascertained,” he added.

All four suspects are absconding. “Raids are underway to arrest the accused,” said the Nalanda SP.
