Patna: A family of five – including the husband, wife and three children – was found dead in a village in Lakhisarai district, around 150km southeast from Patna, on Monday.

The incident happened in Lakshmipur village under Manikpur police outpost in the district. The police rushed to the place and launched investigations. An FIR was lodged and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

The dead have been identified as Pankaj Mahto and his wife Archana Devi – both in their thirties – and their children Priyanshu, 6, Prince, 4, and Vicky, 2.

Lakshisarai sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Manish Kumar told The Telegraph that, prima facie, Pankaj killed his wife and kids before committing suicide. Pankaj worked as a labourer in Rohtak, Haryana, and had come home five days ago. “Pankaj strangled his family and then hung himself from the ceiling fan to commit suicide,” he said.

While the bodies of three children was found on a bed in the house, Archana was found lying in a drain and Pankaj’s body was on a huge box just below the fan from which he hung himself.

Manish said that other relatives, including Pankaj’s mother, lived in another house close by and according to them there was frequent domestic strife and tension in Pankaj’s household.

“Domestic disputes could have been a reason behind the suspected murders and suicide, but we are not leaving anything to chance. We have started investigations into the incident from every angle to unearth any foul play if there,” Manish said.
