The four, on patrolling duty, on the night of August 2, had allegedly extorted Rs 5,000 from scrap dealer Laldev Rai near Garadanibagh. According to sources, they noticed a vehicle parked outside Rai’s house and entered the house alleging that he was involved in diesel theft from government vehicles. They also demanded Rs 5,000 from Rai to settle the issue.

The sources added that Rai had to face torture by police personnel in the presence of his family members at his house. On Friday, Rai approached senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manu Maharaaj with a plea that he was robbed by some police personnel at Gardanibagh. Based on the complaint, Maharaaj constituted an inquiry committee led by DSP (Sachivalaya). The DSP, in his probe, found that the allegation was true.

Based on the report, the SSP arrested them. Patna City SP (central) D. Amarkesh said: “The four police personnel have been arrested and they have been sent to jail. We are also submitting a report to the SSP for their suspension.”

They were booked under Section 384 of the IPC (extortion demand).
