Patna: A gang of armed criminals looted a police vehicle after hurling bombs and opening fire at a police team in Sheohar district early on Friday morning.

A police officer posted as station house officer had a narrow escape in the cross-firing. Other members of the police team had to take shelter in a house.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team attached to the Piprahi police station of the district intercepted a sports utility vehicle (SUV) near Mumba village and attempted to search the car. As soon as the cops started to search, the occupants of the car hurled bombs. The bomb blast created panic and the policemen engaged in the operation were seen scurrying for safety.

The Piprahi police station house officer had a narrow escape when the criminals fired at him from close range. However, no police personnel was injured in the incident.

Sheohar superintendent of police Santosh Kumar said the looted car was recovered from Rakasia village under the jurisdiction of Runnisaidpur police station in neighbouring Sitamarhi district.

He said raids were on to arrest the criminals involved in the crime. However, nobody has been arrested.

In Lakhisarai, an encounter took place between security forces and Maoists on Thursday evening. Police sources claimed that many activists were injured in the gun battle.

Bloodstains were found on the encounter site which suggested that several Maoists had suffered bullet injuries. One rifle was also seized from the spot.

The Lakhisarai SP said that the combing operation was launched following secret information that a number of Maoists had assembled in Baranbasia forest under the jurisdiction of Mazda police station of the district.

The Naxalites started indiscriminate firing on seeing a police team. In the gun battle, several Maoists suffered injuries but they managed to escape. However, no policeman was injured in the cross-firing.
