Patna: Arjun Sahni, 25, was lynched and another injured on Saturday over allegations of cellphone theft in Muzaffarpur, 80km north of here.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harpreet Kaur said a mob assaulted Arjun and Bittu Sahni, 23, in Jagdamba Nagar under Ahiyapur police station around 4pm.

Arjun succumbed to his injuries while Bittu is at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital. Arjun’s family said he was deliberately murdered following an old altercation with persons who had sexually harassed his wife on July 23.

Agitated residents blocked the road and disrupted traffic near Bairia after the attack and indulged in arson and stone-pelting. The police used mild force to disperse the protesters.

Arjun’s brother Rabindra Kumar has lodged a complaint, naming Shobhan Kumar, Raja Kumar, Dheeraj Kumar, Manjeet Kumar, Chhotu and Nanhaka Kumar and 20 unknown persons. “Raids are underway to arrest those involved,” Ahiyapur police station house officer Manoj Singh told The Telegraph over the phone on Sunday.

One of the accused also made a video of the lynching. “Action will be taken against the accused,” SSP Kaur said. She said Arjun had faced allegations of mobile theft earlier too, so “the police are probing the case from all angles”.
