Patna: Awadesh Kumar, a 27-year-old from Rohtas district, was allegedly abducted and murdered following a dispute over sand mining, police said on Friday.

The police said Awadesh, a resident of Darihat, and his brother Ajay Kumar were kidnapped on Thursday evening when they had gone to their agricultural field on the banks of the Sone.

Ajay, 31, was released on Friday morning after being assaulted but Awadesh, a tractor driver, was taken to an unknown destination. His body was later recovered from the Darihat sand mining ghat.

Ajay told the police Awadesh was beaten up by the two contractors of the sand mining ghat on Wednesday over lifting of sand. “He was threatened with dire consequences by the contractors. On Thursday, we were taken hostage by the contractors, and on Friday, my brother’s body was found,” he mourned.

The family members, the police said, have disclosed the names of two contractors who threatened Awadesh but the cops did not reveal the names, claiming it would hamper the investigation.

Dehri sub-divisional police officer Anwar Javed Ansari visited the ghat were Awadesh’s body was found. He said the 27-year-old was killed over a sand mining tiff. “Raids are on to nab the two named accused and six unknown persons,” he told The Telegraph over the phone.

Awadesh’s body bore marks of external injury, revealing he was tortured in captivity. His wife, Sangeeta Devi, and mother Ramkali Devi demanded the arrest of the accused, who are considered influential in the region.

Former Darihat mukhiya Harishankar Prasad Singh threatened to launch an agitation against the police if the accused were not arrested at the earliest. “We have given an ultimatum to the police to arrest the accused by May 20,” he said.
