PATNA: With the introduction of new measures like e-challans, motorists have gradually started following road safety norms in the city.

“Although Patnaites continue to commit offences like use of cellphones or non-usage of seat belts while driving, their incidence has come down,” Patna traffic SP P N Mishra said on Friday.

According to sources, as many as 31 accidents occur every month at places like Gandhi Maidan, Bypass thana and Saguna Mor. Now, more attention is being paid in these areas to reduce the number of accidents.

“Altogether 31 accidents happened in Patna in January, 20 in February, 31 in March, 27 in April and the highest (38) in May. However, now people have started following rules related to zebra crossings at traffic signals as the fines collected have reduced,” said the traffic SP.

Manmohan Kumar, a traffic cop on Hartali Mor, echoed Mishra’s claims. He said, “Awareness about traffic norms has increased among motorists.”

Transport secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal also claimed that pillion riders in the city had also started wearing helmets. “The number of such people is higher in Patna than in other districts,” he told this newspaper.
