One held in mom and daughter assault case

Patna: Police have arrested Gaurav alias Sonu, a friend of Sanjeev who shot at Anita Devi and her daughter Riya (20), who had spurned his advances, at their residence in Daud Bigha on Friday.

Gaurav has been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and various section of the Arms Act. Gaurav, who had accompanied Sanjeev to the victims’ house, told the police that after committing the crime, Sanjeev had escaped to Nepal fearing police action.

Gaurav also told the police that his friend was after the girl for the past six months and was pressuring the girl, a student of the College of Commerce, Arts and Science (Rajendra Nagar) to marry him. On the day of the incident, Sanjeev had called Gaurav asking him to accompany him to the girl’s house opposite to Nalanda Medical College.

Superintendent of police (SP), east, Rajendra Singh Bheel said: “Based on information provided by Gaurav, the police are conducting raids at different locations. We have also talked to the Nepal police.” The SP said police had come to know that the youth was involved in various crimes and used to spend money in betting and other illegal activities. Police sources said the girl knew about the youth’s activities and hence avoided him.

Sources said the youth on several occasions had threatened the girl of dire consequences if she did not agree for marriage and hence though the girl avoided the youth, she was afraid of him and so used to talk to the youth sometimes.

The police have come to know that the youth comes from a rich family involved in the event management business. Police sources said the youth’s father runs a tent house and catering business, while his elder brother owns a restaurant in the Rajeev Nagar area.

Gaurav told the police that though he had accompanied his friend to the spot, he was unaware of his plan to shoot the girl and that Sanjeev had a pistol. After the incident, Sanjeev and Sonu fled the spot, but their images were captured on a CCTV camera installed in the area. Based on the CCTV footage, the cops arrested Sonu from the Patliputra police station area.

The mother and daughter are undergoing treatment at Rajeshwar Hospital (Rajendra Nagar) and their condition was said to stable.
