Patna: The agriculture department has decided to produce organic seeds on a certain area at each of its seed-multiplication farms.

Minister Prem Kumar on Tuesday said that in each of the farms, one acre will be used to produce the seeds organically. The decision has been taken to promote production of organic seeds.

There are 241 seed-multiplication farms in Bihar spread over 36 districts. Each of the farms is spread over 20 to 25 acres and is managed by the agriculture department.

Prem said the objective was to make farmers aware of the process of producing organic seeds.

To take the initiative forward, a meeting of all the sub-divisional agriculture officers was organised on Tuesday. They were briefed about the methods to be used to produce organic seeds.

The seed-multiplication farms are used to produce foundation seeds from breeder seeds, which are again used for producing certified seeds.

Both the farms and the farmers registered with the state seed corporation. They undertake production of certified seeds which are distributed among farmers who get subsidy to use them. This is targeted at ensuring supply of quality seeds among farmers.
