PATNA: A sports utility vehicle (SUV) carrying unknown number of occupants fell into swollen Ganga after breaking concrete railings near pillar number 38 of Mahatma Gandhi Setu at around 5.30am on Tuesday. The SUV was coming towards Patna from Hajipur.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) second-in-command Ravi Kant said that the river is around 40 feet deep in the mid where the SUV fell down from the heights of the setu.

He said that the vehicle could not be located even after several hours of search which was stopped at sunset.

“The Gandak river merges in Ganga at the point where the SUV fell. Along with that, at present, the water is flowing in very high volume due to rainy season. Due to both factors, the water current at the place is very high and deep divers are unable to search for the submerged SUV. They were being constantly carried away by the current. Our two boats also got saved from getting toppled twice during the search and rescue operations,” the NDRF officer said.

He also said that as there were no eye witness, no one was able to tell that how many occupants were there in the SUV.

He said district administration of Patna and Vaishali were on alert but none had received any missing complaint till Tuesday evening.

Kant also said that search and rescue operation would be resumed at around 6am on Wednesday again to locate the SUV.
