Patna: A 60-year-old businessman, abducted for ransom from Ara in Bhojpur district on Monday evening, was rescued in Rohtas district early on Tuesday morning. The police arrested five abductors and recovered illegal arms, an SUV, cash and mobiles from their possession.

Four criminals travelling in an SUV abducted one Vidyanand Prasad, a grocery dealer of Meghalaya, from a vegetable market in Ara town around 8.30pm on Tuesday and subsequently took him to Buxar and Rohtas.

Vidyanand is a native of Bhojpur district and had come to meet his family members recently.

The SUV kept moving for four-five hours before a Rohtas police team intercepted it near Baradih. They were reportedly heading towards Indrapuri (in Rohtas district) with the victim but were arrested between 2.30am and 3am. The SUV driver tried to escape but police personnel overpowered him.

During vehicle-checking, the cops spotted the elderly man in the SUV who revealed to the police that he had been kidnapped from Ara. The occupants of the SUV, identified as Sanjay Kumar Yadav, Avinash Kumar, Vicky Kumar, Vivek Kumar and Tarun Kumar Choudhary, were taken into custody and brought to Kargahar police station for further questioning.

Vidyanand told the police that the criminals had kidnapped him for ransom. Sanjay, a resident of Ara, allegedly hatched a conspiracy to kidnap him as he (Vidyanand) had forbidden him from giving tuitions to his daughter in Ara. “Perhaps, he wanted to avenge that and plotted the abduction,” Vidyanand said.

Rohtas superintendent of police Satyaveer Singh said the abducted trader was recovered during a vehicle-checking drive jointly being undertaken by Kargahar, Chenari and Shivsagar police stations on Monday night. “Since the kidnapping case was lodged in Bhojpur, we handed over them to Bhojpur police,” he told reporters.

The SP claimed that the five kidnappers arrested in connection with the case had criminal antecedents. “We are collecting details of the criminal cases pending against the arrested kidnappers, all stated to be residents of Bhojpur district,” he said, adding that one country-made pistol, three live cartridges, an SUV, Rs 30,000 cash and eight mobiles were seized from them.

Bhojpur superintendent of police Awakash Kumar said Vidyanand used to deal in potatoes and onions in Meghalaya and had come to his house in Eastern Nawada locality of Bhojpur district headquarters town a week ago.

He had gone to the grocery market under the jurisdciction of Ara Town police station when five criminals abducted him.

As soon as the police got to know about the incident, separate police teams carried out raids in the areas under the jurisdiction of Agrer police station and traced the captive and his kidnappers.

“The arrested persons will be produced before the court after initial interrogation,” the SP added.
