GOC of Bengal to be felicitated by Bihar government

Kolkata: Lt Gen Ashok Kumar Choudhary, general officer commanding, Bengal area will be felicitated by the Bihar government during the Republic Day Parade at Patna on Sunday. The general will be felicitated by Bihar governor D Y Patil in the presence of chief minister Nitish Kumar. Lt Gen Choudhary, who became the first ever three-star general to lead the Bengal Area Headquarters in October, 2012, is a highly decorated officer. He has received the Ati Vishist Seva Medal twice apart from the Sena Medal and Vishist Seva Medal.

The general has had a distinguished career in the Army spanning nearly 40 years. An alumnus of Sainik School, Tilaiya, National Defence Academy, Khadagvasla, and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, he went on to complete the Long Defence Management Course at Secunderabad.

Lt Gen Choudhary has held critical command and staff appointments, including tactical and operational levels of command in active counter-insurgency and proxy-war environment in the North East and Jammu&Kashmir. He also held important staff appointments of the Army including Col GS of a Division, BGS of a Corps, Deputy Director General of the Military Operations Directorate and Additional Director General of Military Intelligence.

After commanding a Corps in the Western front, he took over as the Director General Military Operations (DGMO) at Army Headquarters. There, he was responsible for conduct and co-ordination of Army operations in the country besides developing operational doctrines and policies for the Army.

The general retires from service on January 31 this year.
