red-crossPatna: City residents can now avail of separate blood components more easily with the inauguration of a new blood component separation unit (CSU) at Bihar branch of Indian Red Cross Society on Wednesday.

According to experts, the separator will facilitate the availability of red blood cells, freshly frozen plasma and platelets. As the demand for whole blood is declining, more than one person will get benefitted from a single unit of blood with the help of CSUs.

Inaugurating the unit, governor D Y Patil said he was proud of being a part of the event and praised the Bihar Red Cross for installing a state-of-the-art CSU here. “We will have to work hard to create an atmosphere where we can have donors in plenty,” Patil said, adding blood donation programmes should be made a people’s movement to achieve 100% voluntary donation.

He also pitched for organising awareness camps to remove misgivings or ignorance regarding blood donation. “The Red Cross Society is also helping revive sick blood banks in 17 districts of Bihar,” Patil said and hailed the efforts of the Red Cross blood bank subcommittee and the volunteers to reach out to the people.

The high-tech CSU has cost Rs 50 lakh. According to Red Cross blood bank subcommittee chairman Dr Binay Bahadur Sinha, it’s the 4th such unit in the state capital. “Even though the unit was formally inaugurated on Wednesday, we have already supplied over 800 units of platelets to dengue patients in the state during the last few months with the permission of governor Patil,” Sinha said.

Speaking on the occasion, lady governor Pushplata Patil exhorted people to participate in voluntary blood donation so as to ensure there was no paucity of blood. “One unit of blood can help so many people. It is the best donation,” she said.

Several eminent doctors, including A A Hai, Manju Gita Mishra, Dilip Sen and D K Shrivastava, were also present on the occasion.
