Malik nod to tourism study and Atish chair

Bhagalpur: Governor Satya Pal Malik on Saturday gave his nod to establish a centre for tourism studies at the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) and establish a chair in the name of 10th Century Buddhist scholar Acharya Dipankar Srigyan Atish.

Malik had on Friday expressed his desire to promote Vikramshila in the international market. TMBU vice chancellor Nalini Kant Jha said: “A large number of students started showing interests in the course and demand of the course is high. A large number of students who have to travel to distant places for the course, could enjoy it at their doorstep if TMBU introduces it in its curriculum.”

“We will send details of the blueprint to Raj Bhavan as well as the human resource department of the Bihar government for approval of the course. Besides, we would have to also send the proposal for opening the course at the varsity to University Grants Commission (UGC),” Jha said.

He said the governor who is the chancellor of universities gave his consent and asked him to complete all technical formalities soon.

Press Club of Eastern Bihar, Bhagalpur, has demanded establishing a chair at TMBU in the name of Acharya Dipankar Srigyan Atish though a memorandum to Malik during his visit to Vikramshila.

Club president Rajiv Siddharth Malik, said: “It would be done cent per cent, the governor assured us after we placed our demand before him,” Siddharth said.

Historians welcomed the move. “Dipanker was born in Bhagalpur and historians like Shiv Shanker Singh Parijat and Raman Sinha have been conducting research. The proposed chair will research work,” said Behari Lal, head of the postgraduate department of ancient history at TMBU.
