Patna: HC raps Bettiah police over minor’s kidnapping
2 min readPATNA: The Patna high court on Wednesday rapped the Bettiah police and ordered it to recover a child kidnapped on September 29, 2016 soon at any cost.
Anshu Kumar was eight years old at the time of his kidnapping when he was playing in front of his house in Bettiah town of West Champaran district. Later, an FIR was lodged with the Town police station on October 7, 2016 by child’s father Ravi Ram. After failing to get back his child, the father moved the high court and filed a criminal writ petition on July 19 last year.
Bettiah SP Jayant Kant also physically appeared before the division bench of Justice Ravi Ranjan and Justice Prakash Chandra Jaiswal during the hearing on Wednesday and ensured the court that police would seriously take up the case and would recover the kidnapped child soon. The court also ordered the SP to submit a report on the investigation done till now and actions taken to recover the child within three weeks’ time.
Petitioner’s counsel Chandra Kant said that after lodging of FIR, police arrested one Bittu Kumar, who was the neighbour of the child, for his involvement in the kidnapping.
“Bittu even gave a confessional statement before police that he kidnapped the child to pressurise the child’s mother to establish physical relation with him,” the counsel said.
The counsel further said that Bittu named one Shiv Mohan in the district to whom he had handed over the child after kidnapping after child’s mother did not bowed down before his demands.
“Police did not even analyse the call detail record of suspects nor did they tried to nab Shiv Mohan. The child was never recovered since then,” he said, adding, police filed chargesheet against Bittu and did not further investigate the case.
Counsel Kant further said that last year, Bittu, after coming out of jail, told victim’s mother that her son was kept captive in Silluguri, West Bengal.
He said the parents tried to seek police’s help and after failing they themselves went to Silliguri and came to know that their son was present there till sometime back. “It was after this, the child’s father moved high court,” he said.
