Patna: Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is the “best face to provide leadership,” feels Shatrughan Sinha at a time when the developments in Karnataka seem to point at a newfound Opposition unity.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the “rebel” BJP MP from Patna Sahib, who has been issuing statements that make his party leaders squirm in discomfiture, said: “Mamata is a very capable, popular, down to earth and intelligent leader. She has the capacity to struggle against all odds and also her track record is very good. In the current situation she is the best face to provide leadership.”

Shatrughan, in the same breath, added that the leadership issue could be decided at a later stage, and maintained that Yashwant Sinha was an able person to coordinate on such matters.

Shatrughan has expressed solidarity with former Union minister Yashwant Sinha’s anti-BJP platform. At the same time, the actor-turned-MP maintained that if Mamata’s name would be proposed as the leader, he would be the first to support the idea.

“I support her leadership and have always made it clear on more than one occasion,” he said. His present status as BJP MP notwithstanding, Shatrughan also fired off a series of tweets when H.D. Kumaraswamy took oath as the Karnataka chief minister on Wednesday.

Shatrughan made clear his admiration for unity and the last tweet said: “…However they’ll have to be very careful of poachers & so called King Kong & team. May this fragile but desirable Govt. be handled with care & have a smooth run for 5 yrs by being extra careful & united.”
