Constables get axe for jail phones

1 min read

Muzaffarpur: District magistrate (DM) Mohammad Sohail has put three jail constables under suspension for facilitating cellphones to prisoners.

The DM and senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harpreet Kaur on Saturday made a surprise inspection of all jail wards, including terrorist cells, and found 12 cellphones, chargers, SIMs and other objectionable things.

The cellphones were not recovered from the prisoners; these were lying in places under the jail personnel’s watch. Jail superintendent R.K. Jha said he has sent a report, as sought by the DM, following recovery of cellphones and other objectionable things. On the basis of the report, the DM suspended the jail constables.

The DM has asked the jail superintendent to keep strict surveillance on nefarious designs of jail personnel hobnobbing with tough prisoners and provide them facilities to talk on cellphones outside jail.

Superintendent of Police (City) Upendra Nath Verma said an FIR has been lodged with Mithanpura police station. All cases related to recovery of objectionable things from jail will be reviewed in a day or two. District authorities have conducted seven raids on the jail premises in three months and lodged FIRs against inmates Rohit, Dani Yadav and Chandan for issuing threats and making extortion calls.
