Patna: Tension gripped Bara village in Aurangabad district of central Bihar following an attack on an under-construction cowshed site late on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.

Police said a group of heavily armed CPI (Maoist) squad reached Bara village under the jurisdiction of Deo police station in Aurangabad district around midnight and brutally assaulted daily workers engaged in construction of a cowshed. The rebels, who were carrying explosives as well as sophisticated weapons, later set a water tank, a tractor and a motorbike on fire. The workers engaged in the construction of a cowshed being built by a private firm – Go Rakshia Samiti – fled the site in panic after the incident.

Residents told police that explosives went off injuring a few cows. Aurangabad additional superintendent of police (operation) Rajesh Kumar said that the rebels were protesting construction of a cow-shed in the Kaimur plateau area.

The Maoists had threatened to stall the ongoing work, but the cow protection committee didn’t adhere to the warning and continued to work. Around midnight on Wednesday, the Maoists attacked the construction site and torched the vehicles and other equipments.

They also abandoned a hand-written pamphlet at the spot, which the police later seized. Additional superintendent of police (operation) Rajesh said a manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits. Rajesh, however, denied any worker or cow was injured in the blast.

“The search operation is on in the region with the help of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). We have also sought the cooperation of adjoining police stations in the operation,” the ASP told The Telegraph over phone. “Deo circle inspector Shyam Kishore Singh said residents were not ready to open their mouth against leaders of the banned outfit. The entire region is a Maoist stronghold.”

Patrolling in the area has been intensified in the wake of the incident.
