2 min read

The development of any society depends on the quality of its skilled health workers. Till date, the Bihar government has taken many important steps towards building a healthy Bihar which has yielded great results. It is very important to motivate these health workers to bring about reforms in social wellness. The Government of Bihar has come up with a very unique plan for the overall development of our state. It has instituted the Bihar Swasthya Seva Ratna awards to honour the best minds in the public healthcare sector. This initiative is a way forward to achieve the goal of Human Development Mission and the Twelfth Five Year Plan and to create a positive environment among health workers.

Some awards will be given quarterly while some others will be given annually. For the first quarter, nominations started in July while the same will start for the second quarter in October. Annual awards recognizing the best health officials at the regional level and programme officers at the state level would also be given. At the district level, three officials and civil surgeons would be recognized for their performance. The health department will identify these candidates and nominate them for the awards for achievements against targets set by the department.

These awards will be given out every three months. On the basis of the work done in the month of April, May and June, the award will be given in the month of July and on the basis of work done in the month of July, August and September, the award will be given in the month of October. Accordingly, after every three months on the basis of their performance health workers will be rewarded. This way the award ceremony will be held four times in a year.

Annual awards recognizing the best health officials at the regional level and programme officers at the state level would also be given.

For the successful execution of this programme, a state level committee called the RMNCH along with a separate unit has been made. “Over 1,700 health workers and officials from the community, block, district and state levels will be eligible to receive these awards,” said Amitava Banerjee, Communication Specialist with Care India, which is not only supporting the awards but also providing technical support to the Government of Bihar.

Bihar Swasth Seva Ratan is a one-of-its-kind initiative. The awards have been conceived with a view to develop performance-based leadership among health workers and health officials and to recognize the performers. ‘Swasth Seva Ratna’ will boost the confidence of health workers and health officials. This initiative will definitely motivate health workers to do better which will, in turn, help the State government in improving the health sector in Bihar.
