Bihar government suspends Muzaffarpur SSP after raids find traces of disproportionate assets
2 min readPATNA: The Bihar government on Tuesday placed under suspension the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Muzaffarpur district, Vivek Kumar, after the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) raided his official residence in the town and premises linked to him in several other places revealed traces of disproportionate assets.
The simultaneous raids began at the official residence of the 2007-batch IPS officer in Muzaffarpur, his paternal place in Kanpur and his in-laws’ houses in Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on Monday noon.
Sources said unaccounted for cash of Rs 6.25 lakh and jewellery worth Rs 5.5 lakh were recovered at the Muzaffarpur residence along with documents indicating possession of landed property and other assets. Besides, Rs 45,000 in old currency notes were also found in his residence.
An SVU official said total disproportionate assets owned by the IPS officer are nearly 300 per cent of his known sources of income.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar discussed with DGP KS Dwivedi the raids and the findings on Tuesday. The state home department then issued a notification saying that Vivek Kumar was placed under suspension.
Ratan Sanjay, the IG of SVU, said an FIR was lodged against Vivek Kumar on April 15 at the SVU police station after tip-offs were received that the latter had amassed disproportionate assets three times of his known sources of income.
Sources said Vivek Kumar was in touch with the liquor mafia active in Muzaffarpur district. “After finding concrete proof of the evidence to that effect, SUV registered a case against him,” said a police official familiar with the raids. It is possible that the IPS officer would be arrested later this week, he added.
