NIT goes traditional

Patna: National Institute of Technology graduates this year will wear saris and kurta-pyjama, ditching the “colonial era gown and caps”, at their graduation ceremony next month.

The institution has issued a notice ahead of the convocation ceremony on June 17. Governor Satya Pal Malik will be the chief guest at the ceremony and Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, the chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education, will be the guest of honour.

Nearly 700 students from the 2012-17 academic session will get their degrees at the ceremony.

NIT-Patna’s dean (student welfare) Prakash Chandra said: “For this year’s convocation, the institution has decided to change the dress code. We are replacing the colonial era gown and caps with the traditional kurta-pyjama for men and sari for the women.”

The engineering institution has also fixed the colour scheme. Men will wear cream-coloured kurta and white pyjamas, and the women will wear cream saris with a white blouse. NIT-Patna will also provide graduates jacket and safa (turban) – to replace the usual gowns and caps – in colours specific to the branches and streams.

The convocation ceremony will be organised at Gyan Bhavan from 10am.

Students will be present from the seven engineering batches and MTech courses. They can register on the NIT-Patna website for Rs 1,200 by June 16.

Saurav Raj, a student from the civil branch who will be at the convocation who has been placed with Vedanta, said: “I have decided to participate in the convocation as it will be an opportunity to meet our friends after years. We will also come to know about the career plans of our friends.”

Sources said the 2012-17 academic session has been good for NIT-Patna as maximum students have been placed with average salaries of Rs 8 lakh per annum.

Medha Kumari of computer science engineering received an offer of Rs 39.25 lakh annual package from Adobe which is highest package received by any student at NIT Patna.

In another development, IIT-Patna has issued a notification for its annual convocation.

The institution’s ceremony will be held on August 6, also the foundation day of IIT-Patna.

Students from the 2013-18 academic session have been asked to register for the convocation ceremony.
