Robbers barge in, kill woman
2 min readPatna: Robbers shot dead a woman and looted cash and valuables worth over Rs 4 lakh from her house in Gopalganj district, around 210 km northwest of Patna, in the early hours of Friday.
The incident came two days after armed criminals looted cash and valuables worth over Rs 30 lakh from the house of a doctor in the Gopalganj district headquarters town, close to the Uttar Pradesh border.
Police said eight men believed to be aged between 18 and 30 years barged into the house of Raj Kishore Yadav at Pathantoli village under the jurisdiction of Majhagarh police station in Gopalganj district around 2.30am on Friday when the family members were asleep.
The robbers woke them up, rounded them up, and locked them in a room.
One of the robbers shot Ramanti Devi (38) when she resisted when told to part with a gold earring she was wearing, and also assaulted other family members causing serious injuries to them.
Some local residents rushed to the spot on hearing the sound of gunfire. The dacoits fired in the air to terrorise the residents and took away Rs 50,000 cash and jewellery worth over Rs 3.5 lakh.
Ramanti, a mother of three, was admitted to the local primary health centre from where she was referred to the Gopalganj sadar hospital. However, she died on way to the hospital.
Majhagarh police station house officer Arvind Kumar Yadav said a sniffer dog has been deployed to trace the robbers and “efforts are underway to ascertain the identity of the gang involved”.
Ramanti Devi’s brother Munna Yadav said the robbers entered the top floor of house with a wooden ladder. “The neighbours couldn’t muster courage to challenge the robbers as they were armed with lethal weapons,” Munna said.
On Wednesday night, armed criminals had hit the house of a surgeon, Dr Alok Kumar Suman, on Thawe Road under the jurisdiction of Gopalganj Town police station.
Deputy inspector-general of police (Saran range) V.K. Verma visited Gopalganj and inquired about the two robberies. He told superintendent of police (SP) Rasheed Zaman to nab the gang responsible.
Verma later told reporters that the SP has set up a special investigation team to crack the case.
“I have given three days’ ultimatum to the police officials concerned to solve the two robbery cases and recover the looted articles,” he added.
