Begusarai police arrest 448 for peaceful election

Begusarai: With the election to Begusarai parliamentary constituency and by-polls to Sahebpur Kamal assembly seat to be held simultaneously on April 30, the Begusarai police are going tough against the criminals and anti-social elements in the district.

Begusarai SP Harpreet Kaur on Friday said to conduct free and impartial polls in the district, the police have arrested altogether 448 suspected trouble makers connected to 135 vulnerable polling booths and 158 Maoist-prone booths. The police have identified these booths for special attention during the election. The Begusarai parliamentary constituency comprises 1,641 polling booths. The SP said to hold free and fair poll in the district, the police initiated several drives during the last one month.

Action has been initiated against 47 persons under section -III of the Crime Control Act (CCA). Till Friday, 10 persons have already been served notice for being externed from the district by the district magistrate. In addition to that proposal for denial of bail under section-II of the CCA was also initiated against nine hardcore criminals lodged in jail if they seek bail. The police have already got go ahead against four of them.

The SP said the police are mounting pressure on criminals and anti-social elements through a series of raids. She said as preventive measure, 2,428 persons are bound down in the district under section 107/116 of CrPC which stands as one of the highest under the category among all the districts in the state. Besides, the police have ensured execution of around 1,000 pending non-bailable warrants during the last one month with as many as 383 arrests. During the period, illegal liquor was also seized in large quantity. So far, over 4,100 litres of illegal liquor has been seized and 25 persons have been arrested in this connection. The police also recovered 11 firearms and 64 cartridges, the SP said.

Giving information about the deployment of forces in the district, the SP said, “So far, we have received 24 companies of CPMF besides 11 companies of Bihar Military Police (BMP).” She said as many as 19 cases of violation of model code of conduct have been registered in the district.
