Criminal arrested, accomplices escape

Patna: Police arrested a notorious criminal, Gurucharan Manjhi, involved in several criminal activities, in a late-night raid in Rupaspur area on Sunday.

Manjhi was arrested while he, along with his associates, were planning to commit a burglary.

According to Rupaspur police, the police received a tip-off that some criminals had assembled in Rupaspur canal area and were planning to commit a robbery.

Based on the information, the police conducted the raid to nab Manjhi. However, Manjhi and his associates, on seeing police, tried to escape, but the police were successful in nabbing Manjhi. However, despite nabbed by police, Manjhi tried to escape after attacking the cops with a knife.

Dipak Kumar, the station house officer of Rupaspur police station, said: “When we caught Manjhi, he tried to escape. To free himself from the clutches of the police, he attacked the personnel with a knife which he had concealed on person.”

The police officer said: “Rupaspur police had a tough time in controlling Manjhi, as he made all kinds of attempts to escape from the clutches of the police.”

Police said though Manjhi had been arrested, his other accomplices managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness. Manjhi is a notorious criminal of the area involved in several cases of robberies in the Rupaspur and Danapur areas.

Recently, he came out of jail and forayed into illegal liquor trade over the past few months.

Sources in the police said Manjhi, along with his accomplices, was running illegal liquor trade – supplying Indian-made foreign liquor and also into manufacturing country-made liquor in the breweries he used to run in the area.

Sources in the police said for the past few months, Rupaspur and Danapur police were looking out for Manjhi but on every occasion, he used to escape from the clutches of the police.
