Patna: Bihar witnessed a peculiar marriage on Thursday when very much against the established social custom, a bride led her marriage procession to the house of her would be in-laws after the groom did not turn up on the scheduled date of marriage, angry at not being given adequate dowry.

The bizarre incident took place at Marwari Tola locality in Shaikhpura district, considered a hotbed of Maoist activities.

As per reports, the marriage of Chandan Kumar from Marwari Tola in Shaikhpura district had been fixed with Veena Kumari of Khair village in neighbouring Jamui district. The wedding was scheduled to be solemnised on Wednesday for which all arrangements had been made. All the guests arrived to take part in the marriage ceremony, but the groom did not come as the bride’s family had reportedly refused to give extra dowry that was demanded on the eve of the marriage.

The very next day, however, the bride led a marriage procession to the house of her would-be groom and asked the in-laws to solemnise their marriage, while also threatening to bring the matter to the notice of the police.

Reports said seeing the bride, the groom fled the scene but local villagers caught him and eventually helped solemnise the marriage.

“We thank the local villagers who lent their full cooperation to us and helped solemnise the marriage of my daughter with the groom,” Sanjay Ram, the bride’s father, told the local media.
