Patna: A 35-year-old man shot dead his young wife and two children over domestic issues in Khagaria district, around 168km northeast of Patna, on Sunday morning.

Police said Mithilesh Yadav, alias Mittu, opened fire with a country-made pistol in his house at Kumharchakki village, killing his wife, Pooja Devi, 30, and his two daughters, Meenakshi, 4, and Sonam Kumari, 2.

Mithilesh later tried to kill his seven-year-old son, Amrit Kumar, whom neighbours rescued. Mithilesh tried to escape after committing the triple murders but was apprehended by some neighbours, who alerted Khagaria Sadar police station about the incident.

A police team immediately rushed to the spot and took Mithilesh into custody. The weapon used to commit the crime was seized from a maize field. The police later sent the bodies to Khagaria Sadar hospital for post-mortem. Police said Pooja was five months pregnant.

Khagaria Sadar sub-divisional officer (SDPO) Alok Ranjan said the accused had confessed to the crime. He was later produced in the local court, which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days. “He was interrogated before being produced in the court,” Ranjan told The Telegraph over phone on Sunday.

The SDPO said Pooja’s father, Prakash Yadav, a resident of Sahebpur Kamal in neighbouring Begusarai district, however, alleged that his daughter was being harassed by Mithilesh for dowry. “She was being pressured to fetch more dowry, which she had refused,” he alleged in a complaint lodged with Khagaria Sadar police station.
