Murder on video: Dal, RJD flag Dalit anger

Patna: The video of a Dalit man being beaten to death in Gujarat’s Rajkot surfaced on social media on Monday, drawing condemnation from Bihar’s ruling JDU and Opposition RJD.

“I am very disappointed on the Rajkot issue where a Dalit man has been beaten to death,” said JDU national general secretary Shyam Rajak. “It seems Gujarat, the state known as the home of the Father of the Nation (Mahatma Gandhi) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the place of atrocities against Dalits. The continuous attacks on Dalits is a danger sign and time has come that all the leaders of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes must take strong decision on such issues.”

Rajak further said: “Will we remain mute spectators? I am not going to tolerate this. I am giving a warning that such issues will explode as there is anger among the Dalits and everyone will have to face the consequences.”

RJD national vice president Shivanand Tiwari slammed Prime Minister Modi over the attacks on Dalits in the country in general and Gujarat in particular.

Tiwari cited the example of the earlier incident in Gujarat’s Una when four Dalit youths were thrashed over suspicion of being cow smugglers.

“I still remember Narendra Modi had said that do not beat up Dalits and beat me (the PM) instead. What kind of society Narendra Modi has made in his tenure? I have a survey that says Dalits cannot fetch water from the well. Why cannot he bring an ordinance to protect the SC/ST people after apex court refused to change its stand on the SC/ST Act?” Tiwari said.

He alleged that Muslims and Dalits are being targeted.
