No acche din yet for NDA-ruled states, finds NITI Aayog study

NEW DELHI: NDA-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand have a long way to go to find Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promised acche din with the official think tank Niti Aayog finding Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand under-performing on social indicators.
The latest ranking report on health and education among the aspirational districts released by NITI Aayog has listed the industrial city of Dahod in Gujarat at the top but ranking districts of the NDA ruled states at the bottom, while Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have been shown to have made most of the progress.
The first delta ranking of the aspirational districts has listed Dahod (Gujarat), West Sikkim, Ramanathapuram (Tamil Nadu), Vizianagaram (Andhra Pradesh), and Y.S.R (Andhra Pradesh) as top five who have made most of the progress on improving performances on education and health.
In contrast, while Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir earned the least progress made tag, nine worst performing districts in the NITI Aayog list came from the NDA ruled states of Bihar, UP, Jharkhand, and Chattishgarh. Begusarai, Banka, and Khagaria from Bihar were among the worst performing districts in the state where the NDA has been in power for 13 years under the leadership of the chief minister Nitish Kumar.
The BJP ruled Jharkhand’s Simdega and Ranchi too were at the bottom of the list, which seeks to measure the performance of the state government in filling the gaps to improve access to education and health.Also, Chhatishgarh, where the BJP has been power for about 14 years too, was rapped by the NITI Aayog for worst performance, as Maoist hit Sukma found mention in the bottom 10 list.
Bhoopalpalli in Telangana, which was ranked 100th in baseline ranking on health and nutrition jumped to fourth position in the list for best performance in pre and post natal care. Additionally, the five worst performing districts in the ranking for progress on improving educational infrastructure also came from the NDA ruled states of UP (Chitrakoot and Balrampur) and Bihar (Nawada, Khagaria, and Purnia).
The best five performing districts for education infrastructure were from Andhra Pradesh (Vizianagaram, Y.S.R, and Visakhapatnam), Gujarat (Dahod), and Bihar (Aurangabad).
Incidentally, the NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant had reportedly blamed the BIMARU states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, UP for holding back India’s development, which had invited a strong rebuttal from the MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
