Agitating students paralyse Patna University

Patna: The agitation launched by a section of Patna College students to press for immediate allotment of seats in different hostels continued on Friday with the academic activities in different institutions remaining paralysed.

Representatives of student organizations owing allegiance to different political parties took out a procession from Patna College and disturbed academic activities in different colleges and postgraduate departments of Patna University (PU). Later, they marched to Raj Bhavan to present their charter of demands to the chancellor.

Student suspended: PU vice-chancellor on Thursday suspended mathematics department student Bharat Kumar for his alleged misbehaviour with Patna Science College principal U K Sinha.

Earlier, the principal had lodged a complaint with the VC against the said student. A final decision on the expulsion of the student from the university would be taken on the basis of the report of an inquiry committee to be constituted by the VC, said PU registrar Balram Tiwary.

Exam centre changed: PU’s fourth semester post-graduation examinations in the faculties of arts, science and commerce would commence on July 14. The examination centre of Patna College has been shifted to B N College in view of the current agitation by students. The other examination centre is Patna Science College, said PU examination controller B K Jamuar.

VC’s assurance: Talking to a delegation of the Patna University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) led by its president P K Poddar and general secretary S B Lall, PU VC Simhadri said all the pending cases of promotion would be cleared soon. He further said all the university quarters meant for residential accommodation to teachers would be repaired on a priority basis and a sound security system would be introduced on the campus. The university has already constituted a committee for the beautification of the campus. The university teachers would be protected from any untoward incident on the campus, he said.

Others who participated in the discussion included Puta vice-presidents Bal Gangadhar Prasad and Prabhakar Jha, joint secretary Manoj Kumar and treasurer Shiv Sagar Prasad.

PUTA GB meeting: Puta has convened its general body meeting at 1pm on Saturday at B N College seminar hall to discuss the issues of pending cases of promotion, anarchy prevailing on the campus and unwarranted queries by the pay verification cell of the state government. The meeting will also decide the date of election of new office-bearers of Puta.

Seminar on Union Budget: A seminar on Union Budget, 2014, was held at Patna College seminar hall on Friday. Initiating the discussion, college principal Nawal Kishore Chaudhary termed the budget as “pro-corporate, pro-FDI and anti-poor” and observed that the cause of Bihar has been neglected in the Budget. Those who participated in the deliberations included KPS Keshri, Mani Kant Thakur, Ajay Kumar and Jayanti Sircar.

DDE admission: The sale of application forms for admission to the Bachelor of Library and Information Science course under the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) of PU commenced on Friday. The last date for submission of application forms is July 31, said DDE director Ran Vijay Kumar.
