Patna: The students belonging to extremely backward classes (EBCs) in the state would also get Rs1 lakh after clearing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) preliminary exam and Rs50,000 after qualifying for the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) main examination to make further preparations for civil services.

State’s backward and extremely backward classes welfare department’s secretary Prem Singh Meena on Friday said the EBC students would get the benefits like those from the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in Bihar.

On May 8, the state cabinet had announced Rs1 lakh to all those SC and ST students who cleared the UPSC preliminary and Rs50,000 to those who cleared the BPSC preliminary exams to prepare for the main civil service examinations.

“The EBC students will be covered under the ‘Chief Minister’s EBC Civil Services Incentives Scheme’, which will be governed by the backward and extremely backward classes welfare department,” Meena said.

He said the benefits are only for the students of EBC students of Bihar. A candidate can avail the benefit only once, he clarified.

The state has around 110 castes in the EBC category. The latest entry in the EBC list were Teli and Tamoli castes. The state government, through a notification on April 24, 2015, included Telis and Tamolis in the EBC list. The EBC category students enjoy 18% reservation in state jobs.

Earlier in March 2010, the then NDA government had decided to include Kanus, Halwais, Lohars and Karamakars in the list of EBCs.
