Police said the software engineer, from the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, was travelling to Ranchi (in Jharkhand state) from Patna on a government transport bus on Thursday evening.
The official Raj Kishore Singh posted as a Sub-Divisional Officer with the Public Works Department was also travelling on the same bus, seated beside her.
Midway through the journey, however, the suspect allegedly started molesting the woman. Startled at his behaviour, the woman rang the local police from her mobile phone and sought help.
Soon after receiving the complaint, the police stopped the bus in Gaya district, some 100 km south of Patna, and arrested the official. Subsequently, the official was produced in the court of chief judicial magistrate who remanded him to custody.
“We acted soon after we received the complaint,” Gaya district’s deputy superintendent of police Alok Kumar Singh said on Friday. He said a formal case of molestation had been registered with the police and investigations were on.
The increasing incidents of sexual abuse and harassments have become a matter of serious concern in Bihar. As a preventive measure, the state government has begun imparting training to schoolgirls in martial arts to defend themselves.
