Bihar start on losing note

Patna: Host Bihar started the campaign on a false note and lost a close encounter with Uttar Pradesh 33-35 in the men’s pool D match of the 61{+s}{+t} Senior National Kabaddi Championship which started at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Kankarbagh on Tuesday. Bihar girls also lost their opening match to Punjab 11-37.

In other matches of the day, defending champions Indian Railways, Karnataka, Haryana and Maharashtra started on a winning note. Delhi andKarnataka girls fought a nail-biting battle with both sides raiding the rivals with equal pace but failed to finish the match in their favour as it ended in 33-all.

Bihar boys conceded a 2-point lead to UP in the first half and that cost them the match as they failed to bridge the gap in the second half despite a good combination of raids and catches led by their skipper Anand. The hosts sweated it out in the second half with Anand, Sandeep, Neel Kamal and Surjit winning valuable points and leading their side 29-28 but Rajiv, Avnish and Vikas of UP outsmarted the host catchers and won the match with 7 bonus and 2 lona points. Bihar earned 2 bonus and one lona points.

In the girls’ group, Punjab were too strong to lose against Bihar. Amanpreet Kaur, Jaspinder Kaur and Harpreet Kumar earned good points for Punjab through their deft and deep raids.

Earlier, Bihar legislative council chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singhinaugurated the championship.

Results: Men’s group: Indian Railways bt Punjab 54-13, Maharashtra bt Jharkhand 59-39, UP bt Bihar 35-33, Katrnataka bt Vidarbha 32-14.

Women’s group: Punjab bt Bihar 37-11, Haryana bt Vidarbha 29-17, Maharashtra bt West Bengal 40-17, Delhi drew with Karnataka 33-33.
