BIHARSHARIF: Deepak Kumar, the main accused in the murder of state Chhatra JD(U) general secretary Rakesh Kumar, was arrested from Harnaut railway station on Thursday evening. Rakesh’s mutilated body was recovered from a field at Alipur Pachaura under the Harnaut police station area in Nalanda on June 3. He had been missing since May 29. Six persons, including a woman, had already been arrested in this case.

Biharsharif sadar SDPO Nishit Priya said Deepak, a Grade IV employee of Harnaut Coach Factory, confessed to having killed Rakesh at his Dihra residence under the Harnaut police station area after all efforts to keep him away from his (Deepak) wife failed.

Priya said Diwakar Kumar of Kharuara and his wife Pushpa Devi had conspired with Deepak to eliminate Rakesh, who had allegedly tried to molest Deepak’s minor daughter and had threatened to kidnap her. Diwakar is the brother-in-law of Deepak’s wife.

Diwakar had also confessed that when Rakesh refused to keep away from Deepak’s wife, he, along with his wife and Deepak decided to kill him. He said Manish Kumar and his brother Chandan Kumar of Harnaut had brought Rakesh to Deepak’s house at Dihra where Chotelal and Sonu Kumar joined them and killed Rakesh. Manish was arrested from Howrah while Sonu and Chotelal were arrested from Harnaut.

But Rakesh’s younger brother Nitish Kumar said his brother never had any extramarital affairs and he was killed for political reasons. He accused the police of framing stories to protect a heavyweight political leader at whose instance Deepak was let off from police station without proper interrogation the next day of his arrest. He said FSL personnel had collected bloodstains from Deepak’s house on June 1.
