District welfare officer shot dead in Sitamarhi

PATNA: Unidentified bike borne armed assailants shot dead Sitamarhi district welfare officer (DWO) Shubh Narayan Dutt (57) near his rented accommodation at Bhaw Prasad Road in Kailash Puri Colony under Dumra police station area in the district on Thursday.

Sitamarhi SP Vikash Burman said that the incident took place at around 7.30pm when Dutt was on an evening stroll just outside his residence.

He said that three assailants with covered face reached near Dutt and indiscriminately opened fire from a close range killing him on the spot. Burman said that Dutt had received at least three gunshot injuries.

He said initially, police were unable to the deceased’s identity but later sub-ordinates of Dutt ascertained that it was Dutt who was posted as DWO in Sitamarhi.

“Reasons behind killing were yet unknown,” he added.

Police sources said two pellets were recovered from the spot.

Sources said Dutt was posted as DWO in Sitamarhi in November last year and was a native of Madhubani district. They said Dutt’s family lived at Mithila Colony in Digha, Patna.

One of Dutt’s colleague, on condition of anonymity, told TOI that he was very simple person and was unwilling to join field duty.

“He had shared his feelings that he would be happy if the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe welfare department gives him any less important position and allows him to remain posted in Patna,” he said.

He said that Dutt was from Bihar Welfare Service cadre and had joined duty in October, 1989.
