Patna: A man, allegedly inebriated, killed his one and a-half-month-old son when he began wailing at a village in Vaishali district, around 30km north of Patna, late on Wednesday night.

The incident took place around 9pm at Salempur village under the jurisdiction of Sarai police station in Vaishali district. Police said Dev Kumar Rai got infuriated when Aditya Kumar began wailing.

Anita Devi, the baby’s mother, told the police that she had gone to her neighbour’s house when the incident happened. Aditya was asleep when Dev returned home. He was drunk and started quarrelling with Anita.

As the child awoke and started crying, Dev got agitated and strangulated him to death. When Anita returned she found Aditya lying on the bed. She rushed him to the Hajipur sadar hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Anita has demanded the arrest of her husband, who is absconding after the incident. Dev and Anita’s relatives indulged in an altercation on the hospital premises, blaming one another for the incident. The situation was brought under control after the intervention of senior police officials.

The station house officer of Sarai police station Raman Kumar said the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem on Thursday. “A complaint has been lodged against Dev Kumar Rai and raids are underway to arrest him,” he said over phone.

The incident has sent shock waves among residents of this sleepy hamlet, around 10km north of Hajipur, the district headquarters of Vaishali.

The state was declared dry in April 2016. The sale, consumption and manufacture of alcohol is banned under the new prohibition law.
